Catchiest Opening Lines!

Mini-contest number two is my favorite-opening lines are one of the many things writers work hard to get right. "Yep, it’s done, one last one to worry about."
Simone Welter turned and took in the small warehouse that held all manner of decoration scattered around. It vaguely looked as if every holiday had vomited and coalesced in the small interior.

"Target-" The earpiece crackled as it cut in and out until all I could hear was static.
"Repeat." I peered through the binoculars.
"Target is heading your way," Ethan White, my partner, repeated.
"Move to plan B," the Sergeant chimed in. "And Monroe, please try not to shoot him."
"Crap, Sarge, not even a minor flesh wound? You suck the fun out of every assignment, but I promise to try and control my itchy trigger finger."

in the Christmas lights. So simple. So pretty. So . . . She sighed. Earlier, when she’d

poured herself a glass of wine, she’d cut the overhead lights and opted for the glow from

the store’s Christmas tree. She loved and hated this time of year.

"I have two days to find a fiancé." Ignoring the anxiety that tightened her stomach, Graceann Palmer dipped her fork into her apple pie à la mode and slipped the tasty treat into her mouth.
Her friend Kate sat next to her at the counter in the quaint fifties-era Spirit Lake Diner, located just outside the small Pennsylvania town of the same name. Kate grinned. "You could advertise online: Fiancé wanted for Christmas. Good pay. Temporary position."

Her down-filled coat flapped against her knees as she rushed down the street toward the
Starlight Hills Civic Center, anxious to get out of the cold. The coat did its job insulating her
body from Old Man Winter, but nothing could keep the chill from her heart these days.

It was in response to the remarkof avisitor from Milan who dared to assume the scar the Marquisbore must consistently lead to the misapprehension of all those around him, for whether he was happy or sad, cheerful or angry, it appeared as if he perpetually sneered.

"Are you sure?"
Elly grinned at her friend. "Sal, I think you’re doing this wrong. You’re a realtor, I’m looking for a house. Your job is to talk me into buying, not out of it."

Sally, her lifelong buddy and trainee real estate agent, looked dubious. "It’s old."

Elly let her gaze wander over the deep red bricks of the cottage almost obscured by the climbing white roses. She saw the faded paint on the window frames and doors, the cracked tiles on the roof. None of that mattered. Something about this place called to her, tugged at her. "Imagine it with snow on the roof."

"I’m imagining the roof collapsing."

Robin Sorenson spoke each word with confidence, but her mind had a completely different idea. "I can do

this!" She tried again louder this time, letting the words roll off her tongue. Did she really think if the words
were said often enough, that it would just magically happen? If only it were that easy. With a sharp inhale,
she took a step forward, keeping her eyes focused on the gray two story
building in front of her. Had it
really been more than a month since she'd been home?

"All aboard." The conductor’s voice rang inside the confines of the passenger car, bouncing from the locomotive and the brick station building and back. Azure Brown smiled at the clouds of steam issuing from the man’s mouth as his warm breath met the cold air. Snow covered his wool clad shoulders and his company hat was almost as white as his hair.

"You didn't tell me the Bar V5 held the Guinness World Record for the longest driveway." Rachel Murphy stared out the windshield of her brother Tyler's 4x4 pickup. Against Montana's big sky—a gorgeous, cloudless, cornflower blue this December morning—the snow covering tree branches and mountaintops looked white enough to eat, like whipped cream or better yet meringue. "Guess you need to make sure guests can't run away from the ranch and hitch a ride back to town."

Confederate officer, Craig Langston, shifted the leather strap holding his rifle to the opposite shoulder and crept to the roadside lining the woods, keeping a weather eye out for Yankee patrols.

kitchen sink. A piece of silver tinsel stuck to the seam
along his solid thigh. If she plucked the tinsel off his
jeans, maybe she could sneak a squeeze to see if his
flank was as sturdy as it looked. Would a perfect
stranger mind getting groped by a lonely woman?

The words echoed down the stairs behind Cornelia

Quinn as she took them in a most unladylike fashion,
two at a time, her heeled, white leather shoes slipping on
the plush red carpet. She could hear the leather soles of
his shoes hitting the black and white marble of the hall,
he nearly catching hold of her sleeve when she paused to
heave open the heavy front door.

“Nathan!” A full bowl of popcorn fell out of my hand as I white-knuckled my iPhone. The steady salsa beat of Pitbull’s Manos Pa’rriba filled the kitchen.

His eyebrow arched. “Olivia, por favor apaguen la música.”
I bit my lip in an attempt to keep my jaw from falling to the floor. I pressed the stop button. “Es mejor que? Better?”
“Si, thank you.”
“You’re, you’re . . . naked.”
